Biden proposal on attorneys for asylum-seekers brings confusion

Advocates of a more restrictive immigration policy are voicing concern that President Joe Biden’s plan would put the federal government in the business of hiring lawyers to represent asylum-seekers.

President Joe Biden’s upcoming immigration budget will include a proposal to spend $15 million “to provide [legal] representation to families and vulnerable individuals,” a plan that has advocates on both sides confused even while they debate it.

Advocates of a more restrictive immigration policy are voicing concern that Biden’s plan would put the federal government in the business of hiring lawyers to represent asylum-seekers.
