Tribes suing Newsom say recent compacts violate federal law

The tribes say the administration has attempted to force them to enforce state labor and environmental law and agree to revenue-sharing arrangements as a condition of signing new compacts. The tribes argue the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act bars the governor from introducing topics outside of gaming into negotiations.

Six tribal gaming compacts Gov. Gavin Newsom announced this week contained provisions barred from negotiations by federal law, said attorneys representing other tribes currently suing the governor.
