Judge rejects Oakland’s claim that affordable rent policy is neutral

U.S. District Judge Jon S. Tigar rejected the city’s motion for judgment on the pleadings, which argued the plaintiffs cannot blame the rent control policy for their inability to find rent-controlled apartments that are also accessible.

A federal judge declined Friday to rule in favor of the City of Oakland, which is facing a class action lawsuit that alleges its rent control policy discriminates against people with disabilities.
