Bill ending limits to wrongful death liability on Newsom’s desk

The state Senate gave final passage to SB 447 on Friday. It reflects a long-standing goal of the bill’s sponsors, the Consumer Federation of California and the Consumer Attorneys of California, repealing what they called a “death discount” for civil liability.

California might have a new governor soon, but no matter what happens next week, the current one will sign or veto every bill the Legislature passed this year. This could lead to changes in the state’s legal system that would be difficult for a successor to undo.
