Mining company must pay Pomona $48M over tainted water

According to the lawsuit, the issue started in 1927 when SQMNA shipped fertilizer used for citrus orchards to Pomona. The fertilizer contained a contaminant called perchlorate, which California started regulating in 2007.

A federal jury awarded the city of Pomona $48.1 million in damages in its dispute over contaminated water allegedly caused by the North American subsidiary of the Chilean mining company, Sociedad Química y Minera.

The verdict came Wednesday after eight days of trial in the U.S. Central District of California. The city initially sought $30 million in damages.
