New laws rename judicial holiday, ease police prosecutions, aid ID theft victims

The governor had signed about 350 bills as of Friday afternoon, with nearly 500 more still on his desk. Newsom signed just 372 new laws during a 2020 legislative session interrupted by the pandemic, the smallest number since 1967.

It will be easier for prosecutors to charge police officers with perjury under a new law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The governor also signed bills protecting identity theft victims from debt collectors, extending a statute of limitations for actions against illegal cannabis dispensaries, and substituting Native American Day for Columbus Day as a judicial holiday. All four bills passed the Legislature on near-unanimous votes.
