A may appeal $17M award for off-duty officer shooting

“From a legal perspective, what’s groundbreaking about this case is the fact that a police officer could be technically off duty, but under certain facts and circumstances, his employer can still be responsible for his actions,” said the plaintiffs’ attorney, Dale K. Galipo of Woodland Hills.

Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer is reviewing options including appeal after a federal jury awarded $17 million to the family of a man who was shot and killed by an off-duty LA police officer in Riverside County.

"Our office is reviewing all our options including appeal," Rob Wilcox, a spokesman for Feuer, said in an email Thursday.
