Chinese dehumidifier maker to pay $91M to resolve criminal safety charges

The resolutions are the first corporate criminal enforcement actions brought under the Consumer Product Safety Act, a law giving the commission authority to pursue recalls and ban products, and take other actions.

A Chinese appliance manufacturer agreed to pay $91 million to resolve criminal charges for failing to notify the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission that millions of its dehumidifiers sold to American consumers were defective and could catch fire, the Justice Department announced Friday.
