Santa Clara County grand jury starts removal procedure against sheriff

“Removing a public official by grand jury accusation is uncommon, but it does happen,” said David A. Carrillo, executive director of UC Berkeley School of Law’s California Constitution Center.

In what is considered a rare occurrence, Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith may have to face removal proceedings following a civil grand jury accusations that she violated the Government Code and committed willful and corrupt misconduct while in office.
