Despite lawmakers’ criticism, State Bar trustees push ahead with plan to allow non-lawyers to practice law

The chairs of the Senate and Assembly judiciary committees have said they want the bar to focus on its core mission of public protection. Most lawyers who commented on the proposal have been against the trustees’ plan.

A few weeks after two California legislators stated their opposition to the idea of the State Bar exploring nonlawyers practicing certain areas of law and corporate ownership of law firms, bar trustees voted to push forward on the program with modifications.

“We are talking about a fundamental shift in the way that Californians get legal help that they need,” Ruben Duran, chair of the board of trustees, said just before Friday’s vote.
