Hawaiian Electric board prioritized green energy over safety, lawsuit says
The board of directors “spent millions of dollars towards efforts to achieve a 100 percent renewable energy goal,” earning the utility millions of dollars in bonuses, which the executives used to increase their compensation, the lawsuit claims.




The latest lawsuit stemming from the Maui wildfire is a stockholder derivative action against Hawaiian Electric’s board of directors and officers, claiming they prioritized profits over safety.
The utility has denied responsibility or liability for the fire, saying its power lines in the area had been deactivated and were not generating electricity to Western Maui for six hours before the blaze broke out.
