Pilot to pay jurors more will aid diversity, defense attorneys say

AB 1981 authorized a pilot program to raise the pay for some lower income jurors from $15 to $100 per day. The pilot program kicked off in seven counties on Sept. 1.

Is money the key to diversifying juries? That is the idea behind a 2022 law now going into effect in pilot form. But it could be difficult to expand the practice if California continues to face budget deficits.

The Alameda County public defender's office was one of the leading proponents of the law. Criminal defense attorneys who practice in Alameda County Superior Court say they are hopeful AB 1981 will help juries better reflect the county.
