Amid takeover battle, rural health care district urges Newsom to veto SB 1070

SB 1070 would give the Imperial Valley Healthcare District two more years to seek funding. It is in litigation with the Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District over another law, AB 918, that allowed Imperial to take over Pioneers without voter input or secured funding.

A small rural healthcare district is asking Gov. Gavin Newsom to veto a bill on his desk while it litigates with a rival.

SB 1070 would grant a two-year extension to the Imperial Valley Healthcare District as it seeks a permanent funding source. Last year, Newsom signed AB 918, giving the district the opportunity to place measures before voters on either the March or November 2024 ballots, but it never did.
