Small counties debate benefits of public defender offices

Police in areas with strong public defenders learn to not make certain mistakes, San Benito County Sheriff Eric Taylor said.

Santa Cruz Public Defender Heather Rogers and Assistant County Administrative Officer Nicole Coburn appear during the first panel at "Meeting the Need: The State of Public Defense in California," a one-day conference hosted by UC Davis School of Law.

The first panel at a conference on publicly funded criminal defense on Thursday included one person who looked out of place: A blocky, uniformed rural sheriff. But San Benito County Sheriff Eric Taylor said that even though it might look like he was "tricked into being here," he came with a purpose.
