Deepfake law blocked, 'You were warned,' free speech advocates say

"The ruling in many ways tracked the very issues that we raised in our letters both opposing the bill and urging the governor to veto it," said David Loy, legal director for the First Amendment Coalition. "I'm not surprised that it's been enjoined. It's clearly a content-based restriction on speech."

A federal judge in Sacramento blocked a California law that banned election related deepfakes. Now some free speech advocates are saying they warned legislators long before AB 2839 became law.
