Law banning spectators at dangerous car events upheld
The Alameda County ordinance criminalizes publicly observing the exhibitions of dangerous driving stunts, which often draw large crowds. Attorneys from the First Amendment Coalition argued that the ordinance violated a reporter's free speech protections by preventing him from reporting on these events.
An Oakland reporter failed to convince a federal judge that Alameda County's ordinance banning spectators from observing public exhibitions of reckless automobile stunts on city streets was unconstitutional, allowing the local law to remain in place for now.
The reporter said he fears arrest for observing and writing about the events.
