Longtime lawyer Milton Grimes pleads to evading 21 years of taxes

Grimes represented Rodney King, whose beating by police led to the 1992 riots. The attorney avoided IRS levies by using cashier's checks to withdraw money from his client accounts.

Milton C. Grimes, a Los Angeles lawyer for 50 years who represented news making clients including Rodney King, agreed in a plea statement on Tuesday that he evaded payment of 21 years' worth of federal taxes, more than $4 million.

Grimes pleaded guilty to one count and prosecutors have requested a sentence of no more than 22 months. The statutory maximum is five years.
