State agency agrees to make rules for pesticide-treated seeds
Five environmental organizations accused the pesticide regulation department and its directors of purposely failing to adequately regulate treated seeds, crop seeds that are covered in a mixture of pesticides before planting.
The California Department of Pesticide Regulation has agreed to establish rules for pesticide-treated seeds as part of a settlement with five environmental organizations. These groups had accused the department of deliberately neglecting what they described as a "major" source of pesticide contamination.
"It's about time!" Margaret Reeves, a senior scientist at Pesticide Action Network North America, said in a Nov. 13 joint news release from the plaintiffs....
