Appointing sheriffs for better accountability is a proposition whose time has come
A state proposition to replace elected sheriffs with an appointment process is long overdue, as cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco already use structured selection and removal systems for their police chiefs, ensuring better accountability and management.

Eugene is a retired judge of the Santa Clara County Superior Court, where for 20 years he presided over cases in the criminal, civil, probate, family and delinquency divisions of the court.
