9th Circuit upholds California's cardroom ownership restrictions

The federal appeals court upheld a state law barring individuals with more than a 1% financial interest in casino-style gambling from holding a cardroom license, rejecting claims that it unconstitutionally interferes with interstate commerce. The ruling cites a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding California's pork sales law as a key precedent.

State restrictions on cardroom ownership, which make a person ineligible for a license if they own more than a 1% financial interest in a business that engages in casino-style gambling or control of it, do not violate the dormant Commerce Clause, a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel ruled Friday.
