Supreme Court rejects PAGA appeals, pressuring lawmakers' negotiations

The companies' failure to force plaintiff's nonindividual claims under PAGA into arbitration will reinforce the pressure on negotiations between business interests and the California Labor Federation, along with Gov. Gavin Newsom, to reach a compromise agreement on changes to the law.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected two writs of certiorari seeking review of two California state court rulings against leading ridesharing companies that allow a plaintiff's claims on behalf of co-workers under the Private Attorney Generals Act to be decided in court.

The petitions, by Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc., were probably the last realistic efforts for the companies to argue in court that the Federal Arbitration Act applies to PAGA lawsuits and requires ...
