Protecting LGBTQ students from harmful outing policies
California has passed Assembly Bill 1955, the Support Academic Futures & Educators for Today’s Youth Act, which prohibits school districts from enacting “forced outing” policies that require school staff to disclose information about a student’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to their parents without the student’s consent.
Last month, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 1955, the Support Academic Futures & Educators for Today's Youth Act, set to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2025. As the name suggests, Assemblymember Chris Ward and the California Legislature's LGBTQ Caucus introduced the bill to protect the safety of LGBTQ young people.
