Sacramento judges upheld Attorney General Bonta's right to hire outside counsel, while attorneys working for the state secured a one-year delay on Gov. Gavin Newsom's return-to-office order.

The union representing attorneys working for the state of California has suffered two courtroom setbacks in recent days, with judges upholding the attorney general's right to hire outside counsel.

But the union also obtained a one-year reprieve from Gov. Gavin Newsom's order that state workers return to the office.
