Judge solicited Marsden motion to remove public defender

A retired Solano County judge was admonished for soliciting a Marsden motion, disparaging a public defender in court, and interfering with the attorney-client relationship in a murder case.

A Solano County judge improperly solicited a Marsden motion from a murder defendant and disparaged, in open court, the public defender who had filed two disqualification motions, the Commission on Judicial Performance said.

The admonishment was released Tuesday, eight months after Robert S. Bowers retired from the bench after 21 years, including a term as the court's presiding judge.
