Santa Clarita's ADU ordinance violates state law, lawsuit claims

Housing advocates sued Santa Clarita, alleging its accessory dwelling unit restrictions defy state law. The petition claims unlawful barriers, undermining California's push to expand affordable housing through ADU construction.

The City of Santa Clarita is facing a new legal challenge from housing advocates who accuse the city of flouting state law by erecting unlawful barriers to accessory dwelling units, known as ADUs.

Plaintiffs' attorneys argue the city's housing policies--from owner-occupancy rules to size and parking restrictions--not only defy state mandates but also undermine California's broader push to ease the housing crisis.
