LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles County Superior Court Commissioner Bruce E. Mitchell keeps his unfinished novel in a cardboard box at home. Mitchell began working on the manuscript - details of which he tenaciously guards for fear of jinxing the project - during his third year at Stanford Law School, before work and life got in the way.
