LOS ANGELES - "Walk me through the arguments." "Tell me what I'm missing."
U.S. District Judge Andre Birotte, Jr. has been saying those phrases frequently during his first year on the federal bench. Coming from a 23-year career of mostly criminal law as a prosecutor or defender, he now finds himself with a calendar of 95 percent civil matters, and his last civil experience was 14 years ago.
