      SAN JOSE - Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge William J. Monahan knows exactly when the thought struck him to try to join the bench.
      It occurred during a 2003 retirement party for Bill Crawford, a Mountain View police officer. Crawford had long befriended Monahan, whose father had died while Monahan was still a teenager.
