SAN FRANCISCO - The force of Circuit Judge Marsha S. Berzon's brainy appeal ranges well beyond the nine Western states that comprise the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Some think the reach of her intellect makes her a likely U.S. Supreme Court nominee in an Obama administration, even as her liberal track record made her an unthinkable high court pick for President George W. Bush.
