SACRAMENTO - Two years ago, Sacramento Superior Court Judge Pamela Smith-Steward went from overseeing 500 lawyers at the state attorney general's office to overseeing a criminal docket in her fifth-floor courtroom.
Her appointment to the bench by Gov. Gray Davis in 2002 was the latest stop in a rapidly rising career that has taken Smith-Steward, 42, from a modest upbringing in Los Angeles to Harvard Law School to the upper tier of public-sector legal work.
