San Joaquin Superior

Richard Vlavianos views himself as a kind of go-between - someone who enforces the law, yet serves the public by allaying people's fears about criminal justice.
"Being a judge is kind of the ultimate public service," said Vlavianos, 40, who was appointed to San Joaquin Superior Court by Gov. Pete Wilson in December. "You listen to people, hear what they have to say and give them the impression that what's done is done fairly."
