Nixon Peabody LLP

Published: Feb. 24, 2020 | Announced: Feb. 24, 2020

Matthew A. Richards was promoted to pro bono partner of Nixon Peabody LLP in San Francisco.

Nixon Peabody LLP
names Matthew A. Richards as the firm's pro bono partner

Richards, who is also a partner in the firms' complex commercial disputes practice, has been tapped to lead Nixon Peabody's pro bono initiatives across all of its 16 offices. Nixon Peabody is a signatory to the Pro Bono Institute's Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, and the firm has committed to spending more than three percent of its time on pro bono.

"I've been blessed to work at firms, including here at Nixon since 2008, that value giving back to our communities through our pro bono advocacy," Richards said. "I think it's incumbent upon attorneys to give back to their communities. As I've seen in my asylum cases, access to counsel can be case determinative."

Richards is taking over because the previous partner stepped down. He said he will remain committed to his clients, but the new role requires reallocating time to set goals for the firm's pro bono organization.

"I'm not stepping down in any respect from my complex commercial litigation practice. This is an addition to what I'm already doing," Richards said.

Richards has been involved in pro bono work since he was a student at UC Hastings School of Law and has emphasized immigration law and LGBTQ+ civil rights. Richards, who is a litigator, said although the subject matter is different, his approach to his commercial disputes practice and pro bono efforts are essentially the same.

"The stakes are higher for our pro bono clients, who are at risk of deportation or whose civil rights are being abused in some respects. But in terms of what the work looks like, that's remarkably similar to my day to day practice," Richards said. "I have a number of cases, all of which require me to think strategically about what our ultimate outcome is and how we get there."

As the new pro bono partner, Richards hopes to build upon existing partnerships with legal service organizations but also link various initiatives at the firm, such as sustainability and diversity and inclusion initiatives, to expand pro bono efforts. Richards, who assumed his new role on Feb. 1, is based in San Francisco.

Thorpe joins Mintz' corporate group and brings his practice, which focuses on securities regulation, public offerings, mergers and acquisitions and corporate governance matters. At Mintz, Thorpe said he intends to be a part of expanding the firm's capital markets capabilities on the west coast.
One of the reasons for joining Mintz was his interest in the intersection between the life sciences and capital markets, he said.
"Their life sciences platform is excellent, and all of their capabilities in IP licensing, healthcare, regulatory and FDA provides a lot of tools to work with and compete in the Bay area for life sciences clients that a lot of firms in the area don't have," said Thorpe.
While many venture-backed technology firms stay in the private sector for several years before going public, the life sciences and the healthcare sector use the public capital markets to a higher degree, according to Thorpe, who spent time working in the Division of Corporation Finance of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
"I think with my background, coming from the SEC and working on capital markets transactions at my prior firms, combined with Mintz' capabilities in both capital markets and in life sciences and health care, really create a powerful arsenal to be able to compete and grow the practice in the Bay area," he said.
Thorpe, who holds an MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management, has always had an affinity for corporate finance.
"I've always enjoyed working with companies and helping them at their most crucial points in their life cycles. From navigating very complex processes to go public to establish well-functioning finance and accounting and good corporate governance. I find it extremely gratifying to help companies when the stakes are high," Thorpe said.
Thorpe is based in Mintz' San Francisco office and received his law degree from Washington University.
Thorpe's move was brokered by Larry Watanabe, a partner at the California legal placement firm Watanabe LLC.
