Vinson & Elkins LLP

Published: Nov. 16, 2020 | Announced: Nov. 16, 2020

Emily Stephens joined Vinson & Elkins LLP as partner in San Francisco, Los Angeles.

Vinson & Elkins announced the addition of Emily Stephens as a partner in the investment funds practice last Wednesday. She joined the firm from financial technology startup Capital Technology Solutions, where she was vice chairman for almost a year.
"I realized after I was helping the startup get on its feet that I really missed investment management fund formation work," said Stephens. "I initially thought I was going to do my own firm, and in reaching out to tell people about referrals and to keep me in mind that's when Vinson & Elkins said, 'Wait a second. Why don't you come and build this practice out under our umbrella? This is something that we would be really interested in expanding as well.'"
"I had originally not thought about it because they don't have an L.A. office," Stephens explained. "But the eventual goal is to open one and build out our presence here on the West Coast. So, the more I thought about it, it was just a win win."
Since Nov. 4, she has been practicing out of the San Francisco office.
Stephens had worked alongside Vinson & Elkins' attorneys during her time at Oaktree Capital Management, where she held managing director roles. She fundraised for the largest funds, before joining Capital Technology Solutions earlier this year.
"I think that I do offer a unique perspective compared to other outside counsel because I was on the front line for 14 years, inside understanding the internal issues ... and I was also an investor," she said. "I bring that experience to the table, which will be invaluable to helping clients."

Haynes and Boone LLP

Published: Nov. 9, 2020 | Announced: Nov. 9, 2020

Theresa Conduah joined Haynes and Boone LLP as partner in Orange County.

After spending the last year as vice president of intellectual property at wellness startup dosist, Theresa Conduah has made the move back to private practice as a partner at Haynes and Boone in Orange County.
"It was an opportunity to leverage my broad base in-house and private practice background to provide clients with a holistic perspective and approach to protecting IP assets," said Conduah. "When I was exploring what I call 'making the reverse commute back to private practice,' I did my due diligence. And what attracted me to Haynes and Boone, in addition to of course its outstanding IP practice, was its emphasis on teamwork and leveraging the strength of its attorneys to support its clients."
Conduah's first day with the firm was Nov. 2. Her focus is advising clients on trademark disputes, patent litigation and technology transactions.
"When I was a client, I appreciated when outside counsel had prior experience in house and was able to really think about the business and practical aspects of the advice being provided," she said.
During the last few years, Conduah has been managing counsel of Toyota Motor North America Inc. and intellectual property counsel at United Airlines Inc. She also practiced at Alston & Bird LLP for five years and Milbank LLP for just under two years.
"Joining the firm also presents an opportunity for me to mentor younger attorneys," she said. "For me earlier in my career, there weren't many attorneys that looked like me in leadership positions at firms. I want to take the opportunity to continue my commitment to growing and mentoring diverse attorneys in the pipeline and letting them know that they have choices and opportunities. A lot of times there's a perception that going in house is where we can succeed the most, and of course in-house provides opportunities. But I want younger attorneys to know that they also have the option to stay at a firm and grow within the leadership ranks."
Conduah is a long-standing pro bono counsel for the National Immigrant Justice Center and recently counseled Get Us PPE, an organization that donates personal protective equipment. Conduah helped the organization find reliable equipment.

Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP

Published: Nov. 2, 2020 | Announced: Nov. 2, 2020

Ann Calfas joined Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP as partner in Los Angeles.

Veteran in-house attorney Ann Calfas has joined Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp as a partner, expanding its Los Angeles based labor and employment practice, the firm announced Tuesday.
"I actually had been a client of MSK for over 20 years. So, I had gotten to know several of the labor and employment partners over that time and I just believe that they are the best in their field and are just great, great colleagues to work with," said Calfas of her decision to join the firm.
Calfas most recently was executive vice president of labor relations and employment litigation for Fox Entertainment Group and was the company's chief labor negotiator. She departed from the company in connection with its sale to Disney, she said.
Calfas was involved in negotiations with the Directors Guild, Writers Guild, the Screen Actors Guild and The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. These opportunities have given her a unique advantage in the industry, she said.
"Normally the outside lawyers aren't in the room when all of these contracts get negotiated," Calfas explained. "So to have actually been in the room during the negotiations is a really unique perspective and I think it also gave me an opportunity to really develop expertise about the ecosystem of the entertainment business and how to partner with clients from both the legal and business perspective."
During her 24 years with the company, Calfas also was senior vice president, vice president, senior counsel and counsel for the employment litigation department.
Outside of her practice, she is a trustee of the AFTRA Retirement Fund, which provides retirement benefits to radio and television artists.
"I love being part of a relatively small group of attorneys and executives that have devoted a lot of their careers to understanding the studio labor world," she said. "There are maybe 40 people that really know these contracts in and out and so I really like having that substantive expertise to offer to clients."
