Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP

Allison Martin Rhodes
joined Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP as deputy general counsel in San Francisco.
Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP
welcomes Allison Martin Rhodes as deputy general counsel
from Holland & Knight LLP
Martin Rhodes is an ethics and risk management lawyer based in San Francisco, who has built a practice representing lawyers, law firms and legal tech companies throughout the nation.
Her new role as deputy general counsel will shift her focus from multiple clients to a single one: Sheppard Mullin. Martin Rhodes will run the firm's legal department and handle risk management and conflict analysis with her co-deputy general counsel Charlie Barker and Michael Stewart.
Martin Rhodes worked with Sheppard Mullin before officially joining the firm. She said her work with Sheppard Mullin led to her natural transition into the firm after its long-time deputy general counsel retired.
"Prior to this we had been outside counsel on a variety of issues supporting Sheppard Mullin's legal department for a number of years," said Martin Rhodes.
She describes her practice prior to the move as "doing the typical thing lawyers do, generating business and serving clients."
What excites her about her move is the ability to take everything she has learned throughout her career and put that knowledge into action at Sheppard Mullin, Martin Rhodes said.
Martin Rhodes is a speaker and author. The Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law alumna co-wrote, "Hillman on Lawyer Mobility: The Law and Ethics of Partner Withdrawals and Law Firm Breakups," along with Robert Hillman, a professor at UC Davis School of Law.
Sheppard Mullin announced Martin Rhodes joined on Feb. 25. She brings about 15 years of experience to the firm.
"I have represented law firms and lawyers in legal ethics regulatory issues, litigation and law firm reorganization as an outside attorney for many years. And so now I have gone from outside to inside."

Nixon Peabody LLP
Matthew A. Richards
was promoted to pro bono partner of Nixon Peabody LLP in San Francisco.
Nixon Peabody LLP
names Matthew A. Richards as the firm's pro bono partner
Richards, who is also a partner in the firms' complex commercial disputes practice, has been tapped to lead Nixon Peabody's pro bono initiatives across all of its 16 offices. Nixon Peabody is a signatory to the Pro Bono Institute's Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, and the firm has committed to spending more than three percent of its time on pro bono.
"I've been blessed to work at firms, including here at Nixon since 2008, that value giving back to our communities through our pro bono advocacy," Richards said. "I think it's incumbent upon attorneys to give back to their communities. As I've seen in my asylum cases, access to counsel can be case determinative."
Richards is taking over because the previous partner stepped down. He said he will remain committed to his clients, but the new role requires reallocating time to set goals for the firm's pro bono organization.
"I'm not stepping down in any respect from my complex commercial litigation practice. This is an addition to what I'm already doing," Richards said.
Richards has been involved in pro bono work since he was a student at UC Hastings School of Law and has emphasized immigration law and LGBTQ+ civil rights. Richards, who is a litigator, said although the subject matter is different, his approach to his commercial disputes practice and pro bono efforts are essentially the same.
"The stakes are higher for our pro bono clients, who are at risk of deportation or whose civil rights are being abused in some respects. But in terms of what the work looks like, that's remarkably similar to my day to day practice," Richards said. "I have a number of cases, all of which require me to think strategically about what our ultimate outcome is and how we get there."
As the new pro bono partner, Richards hopes to build upon existing partnerships with legal service organizations but also link various initiatives at the firm, such as sustainability and diversity and inclusion initiatives, to expand pro bono efforts. Richards, who assumed his new role on Feb. 1, is based in San Francisco.
