"Winston has a fantastic reputation and a very active and growing corporate practice," Kong said in an interview. "But what really drew me to make the move was Winston's approach to how they wanted to view intellectual property counseling within merger and acquisition transactions."
"Winston, and in particular Becky Troutman, who's a partner in the San Francisco office, have a vision of wanting to centralize and be systematic about how the firm approaches and handles intellectual property aspects of mergers and acquisitions," he explained.
The goal, according to Kong, is for not only the firm's corporate strengths to be recognized in its mergers and acquisitions transactions, but also the way the firm handles the intellectual property aspects of those deals.
"This opportunity was very good for me at a personal level because of the role I would get to play in terms of leadership and in terms of shaping the intellectual property practice within mergers and acquisitions firm wide," he said.
Kong has experience advising clients in intellectual property licensing, technology development and the commercialization of content and media. He spent the bulk of his career in the Bay Area before relocating to Los Angeles four years ago.
"I always had an interest in technology," said Kong. "I studied computer science in college and worked in software development before I went to law school. I really came of age as a lawyer during the first dot com boom so I got to see the very early developments of the law and the internet. And it's been fantastic to continue to work in that field as the internet and the web has only become even more pervasive in our lives. To be able to be one of the fairly early lawyers in that field and continue to build upon the foundation of how the law has changed has been very personally rewarding," he said.
