Big firm lawyers increasingly looking at smaller options

More and more, experienced associates and in rare cases, partners, at big law firms are ditching their gigs in favor of smaller firms or are starting their own practices. Economic pressures are helping to fuel the trend.

In 1997, Kathleen O. Peterson helped open the Orange County office of Preston Gates & Ellis LLP and later worked as the branch's managing partner. She eventually served on the firm's transition committee when it merged with Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham LLP to become 2,000-attorney K&L Gates LLP.
