Judge rules Sacramento Bee carriers are employees, not contractors

Home delivery carriers for the Sacramento Bee are employees, a judge has ruled, and the newspaper was wrong to classify them as independent contractors. More than 5,000 carriers may seek $20 million in damages.

Home delivery carriers for the Sacramento Bee are employees, a judge has ruled, and the newspaper was wrong to classify them as independent contractors.


The decision last week by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Gerrit W. Wood means more than 5,000 past and present carriers can seek class action damages against the newspaper in an upcoming trial.
