Many California workers lack the right to any unpaid leave for their own serious health condition, to care for a seriously ill family member, or to care for a newborn or newly adopted or fostered child. If an employee that has worked for the same private employer for 30 years develops cancer and needs two weeks off for treatment, he has no protected right to unpaid leave unless his employer has at least 50 employees within 75 miles of his worksite.
