Confusion over how to tally damages in disability rights lawsuits led a federal appellate panel Tuesday to ask the state Supreme Court for help.


The problem arose when U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner of Los Angeles awarded a quadriplegic plaintiff $17,000 in damages for street barriers he encountered near his Long Beach home.
