Judicial branch report shows case filings down, felonies up
Case filings fell last year amid budget cuts to the branch, with small civil cases and petty crimes making up most of the drop. Felonies and some other complex matters increased, however.

Case filings fell in trial courts across the state last year, according to a judicial branch report released Tuesday. Total superior court filings dropped to 8.5 million in fiscal 2011-12 from 9.4 million a year earlier, due mostly to a reduction in limited jurisdiction cases, such as limited civil suits and misdemeanors and infractions. Limited civil cases are those worth less than $25,000.
