Lawyer becomes first San Diego recipient of national award
The American Association for Justice honored a batch of California attorneys as Diplomates of Trial Advocacy at the AAJ's annual convention in San Francisco. Among the new inductees was Thomas D. Penfield, a partner with San Diego-based Casey Gerry Schenk Francavilla Blatt & Penfield LLP, who became the only attorney in San Diego to hold the designation. Just nine attorneys in California and fewer than 200 throughout the U.S. have earned the title of Diplomate of Trial Advocacy from the AAJ, billed as the largest organization of trial lawyers in the country. In order to receive the designation, awardees must complete 400 hours of jury trial training with AAJ education programs, including the National College of Advocacy, the AAJ's trial practice school. Other 2013 inductees to the National College of Advocacy Diplomates included David M. Arbogast, Augustus F. Brown, William H. Goforth, Kathleen G. Sumner and C. Dennis Wegner. — Ben Adlin
