Forum Column - By Lynn Duryee - My high-school English teacher had a difficult time coaxing his know-it-all seniors into understanding Gregor Samsa, the protagonist of Kafka's novella "The Metamorphosis." Poor Gregor woke up one morning after a tough night's sleep to find he'd turned into a huge, slimy bug. Long after he started crawling across the ceiling and eating fetid vegetables for breakfast, Gregor continued to have human thoughts and feelings.
