Justices Likely Will Strike Sentencing Guidelines

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court on Monday appeared likely to rule that portions of the federal sentencing guidelines are unconstitutional because they allow a judge to increase a defendant's sentence based on facts that were never proved to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt.
