The Scene was about to depart for the 25th annual Douglas Dinner at the Beverly Hilton, when the phone rang. "I heard there's gonna be a picket line at the dinner tonight," a caller said breathlessly. "I hope they don't ruin it." Ah, yes, among the honorees was former Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt, now of-counsel to Latham & Watkins, which represented Washington Mutual in the Ahmanson Ranch controversy. Hmm, this could get interesting.




Just as The Scene was getting gussied up for the public interest event of the season, we received an alarming telephone call.
