Simpson Thacher: CELERA GENOMICS PLANS TO BUY AXYS PHARMACEUTICALS

Appelera Corp.'s Celera Genomics Group will buy Axys Pharmaceutical Inc. for $177 million in stock. Celera Genomics, based in Rockville, Md., mapped the human genome. The separately traded unit of Norwalk, Conn.'s Appelera Corp. plans to license its genetic database to biotech and drug companies for medical discoveries.
