Environmental Protectors Abuse Means to Justify Ends
Forum Column - By Michael M. Berger - Regulatory zealots have been in the news lately, and not in a way of their choosing. In recent weeks, one group of county land-use regulators has been held responsible by a Santa Barbara County jury for $5.5 million in damages to a farmer they wrongly kept from farming his land. Another group is being sued for interfering with residential development in San Bernardino County. One might properly ask, "What the heck's going on here?"
