Medical device manufacturers' patent battle ends in $1B settlement

Medtronic Inc., one of the world's largest medical device manufacturers, agreed to pay Edwards Life Science Inc., an Irvine company, $750 million upfront to resolve the litigation with additional royalty payments.

A long-running patent infringement battle between two medical device manufacturers over heart valve technology ended Tuesday with a global settlement worth at least $1 billion.
