Forum Column - By Kenneth J. Theisen - Today, nearly 17,000 nursing homes exist in the United States, with a resident population of 1.6 million. The nursing-home population will increase to 6.6 million residents by 2050. By 2030, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that 62 million of us will be older than 65. The Department of Health and Human Services projects that 43 percent of those older than 65 will use a nursing home at some time during their lives.
