Bet Tzedek celebrates pro bono contributors

Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey gave a keynote address to nearly 175 pro bono lawyers, board members, staff and community leaders at a July 9 event honoring Bet Tzedek's volunteers. Lacey discussed the need to work together to protect the vulnerable, particularly the elderly, at the annual "Evening of Recognition" event at Sinai Temple in Los Angeles. Honored at the event were Self-Help Conservatorship Clinic volunteer Kathy Proulx, recognized for her dedication that allows the clinic to stay open; Tim Christian, a long-term paralegal volunteer; Sidley Austin LLP partner Andrew J. Dunbar and associate Thomas Powell as pro bono attorneys of the year for their work on a contested guardianship case; and the Los Angeles office of McDermott, Will & Emery LLP as pro bono law firm of the year for their work with estate and succession planning and securing nearly a quarter of a million dollars for four garment workers who labored in sweatshop conditions. — Ben Adlin
