Some firm layoffs signal trouble; others are just good business

Not all layoffs are created equal, according to legal consultants, who viewed some recent instances as indicators of poor firm health and others as proactive management.

In recent months, legal blog Above the Law published several reports and rumors that Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP had laid off some staff attorneys and associates, including a few in Palo Alto. Around the same time, similar reports surfaced about Dickstein Shapiro LLP.


Neither firm confirmed the layoffs publicly.
