Deputy public defenders in Sacramento are suing the county on the novel legal theory that it's illegally outsourcing their work by assigning misdemeanor cases to private attorneys.
The lawsuit, filed last month, could impact the scope of the county's pending budget debate as supervisors grapple with a $65 million deficit. Budget hearings begin in June.
